Hey there friends!

 

Happy Monday! I am EXHAUSTED.  What about y'all?  

 

I was in Houston all week last week for a meeting and we got home late on Friday and then my husband and I took a quick trip up to Fayetteville, AR and left at 5:00AM on Saturday! (We are nuts.)  It was a short trip but a great one! We got to visit with all of our good friends who we miss dearly and we enjoyed a Saturday night at some of our dear friends lake house! They renovated this cute lake cottage from the ground up and did such an amazing job! This was my first time out there to see it and I can't wait to go back and rent it for a weekend getaway in the future. Even the view in the winter time is beautiful - there is a lovely back deck and a great view of the water right from the living room.

Ok, so now on to what it on my mind this week! (Well there are million things on my mind this week, but I'll just share one with you for now :). )

 

One of my goals for 2017 (and let's be real, it's one of my goals every year) is to get fit and get healthy! I love carbs, sugar, desserts, Dr. Pepper... pretty much anything that's sweet or fattening! (it's so bad I know, I know).

 

I'm pretty good about portion control so I really don't have a problem with my diet right now and I'm not exactly unhappy with my body or appearance, I'm pretty happy these days! However, I really want to try to eat cleaner and be more active this year!  You don't need a reason to want that and I almost think that it is the best way to start living a healthier lifestyle, to want to do it, not to do it because you feel like you have to, or you should, or because your body isn't where you want it to be - do it because you WANT to. :) 

 

When Collin and I started to reflect on 2016 and what we wanted to accomplish as a couple in 2017, we decided that having a cleaner and more active lifestyle was going to be one of our priorities this year.  We haven't set ourselves any crazy or unrealistic goals and we are easing in, figuring it out, and tweaking it to our lifestyle as we go.  We've started walking Remi as soon as we both get home from work - we don't even give ourselves time to sit down or get still, just come home, change and go! We have been doing this almost everyday after work and we have already started to notice a change in our energy!  Meal planning is HARD but it gets easier as your figure out what you like and don't like and what you have time to cook during the week.  We have started eating more grilled chicken, fish, and veggies and less pizza and fattening dinners.  :)

 

We aren't cutting ourselves off completely thought because we are only human.... but it's a start!  I'm sharing a few tips below on how we've made small changes this year and how we plan to continue our lifestyle change.  Now remember, I'm talking about a lifestyle change, not a diet or exercise plan.  Just simple and small ways that we are switching up our weekly rut that can make a big impact.

 

TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE + MAKE SMALL CHANGES WITH BIG IMPACT

 

-PORTION CONTROL - you don't necessarily have to complete cut out all of your favorite things, but have less of it, less times throughout the week

 

-BE ACTIVE 30 MINUTES A DAY - if you a morning person, get up just 15 minutes earlier and do some morning yoga/stretching or take a brisk walk, and do the same or more when you get home from work, walk around the building or office on your lunch break.  It doesn't have to be a crazy hardcore workout session, just do SOMETHING that gets your heart rate up

 

-CUT BACK ON SODAS AND SWEETS - ok this is a big LOL for me.... I love love love soda and sweets, LOVE.  This one will always be a battle for me.  I have cut soda completely before and remember how great I felt without it. I felt cleaner and less swollen and definitely more healthy.  It's my goal to cut soda out of my life for GOOD this year. I'll keep you update on how I am doing lol! 

 

-DRINK MORE WATER - The last time I quit soda I started by ordering a lemon water with my breakfast on the go instead of my large DP.  It was hard at first but just made myself order it instead every time :).  I also bought a few lemons and pre-sliced the for week and kept them in the fridge and just throw one in cup of water when you wake or up or before your head to work. If you don't like making lemon water or feel like you don't have time in the morning, then just roll through sonic and get one on your way to work.  Lemon water has so many benefits and it won't be long before you are craving that more than you are the soda.  Just start small by cutting back on how many you have a day and a week.  It's hard but it's doable!

-THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE EATING - This one might sound silly but often times we go on autopilot and just eat what is easy or near us around meal times.  I try really hard to meal plan for at least the first two-three days of the week and I always try to keep the fridge stocked with lean cuisines or smart ones in case I need a quick meal - it's better than fast food or pizza! I'm going to work on sharing some of our quick and easy go-to healthy meals are during the week and I am constantly on the look-out for more :)

 

- GET MORE SLEEP - this is also a hard one for me, I always feel like there isn't enough time in the day and I enjoy staying up late to get more done but I am always tired in the morning, end up sleeping later than I need to and I feel slow and groggy.  Getting enough sleep is SO important, your body needs rest in order to perform and function properly.  Did you know that sleep debt is a thing?  I actually did a study on sleep debt in college and I wanted to share an article with you all from Harvard that gives you more info on how important sleep is and paying attention to your bodies needs.  You can read it HERE 

 

- UNPLUG FROM TECHNOLOGY - this is an obvious hard one.  Another one of Collin and I's goals for the year is to unplug more.  This can be hard to implement but can be SO rewarding.  As a generation we are so obsessed with social media these days that picking up your phone to scroll through social media becomes second nature.  I love social media and technology! It's a great way to share with others, keep up with friends, family, and colleagues, and provides a form of news and entertainment.  I love all the silly videos I see on Facebook and getting the latest news updates on my apps. Not to mention online shopping, reading blogs, etc.  Technology use is not a bad thing - but don't let it take over your life.  Take small steps that create a large impact to notice change in your life.

 

-Stop plugging it in by your nightstand, leave it in the living room at night.

 

-Put your phone away when you are with friends or at dinner.  Collin and I made that rule when we started dating that we would always be present and off our phones at meal times, sure we slip from time to time but we made it a habit and now it's like second nature when we eat together, we are conscious to stay off our phones :)

 

-Limit your time on the computer at home or watching TV, if you are on a binge watch with Netflix (we all do it) then make yourself do something active in between episodes.

 

This will always be a battle for me since I love technology and our generation has grown up on it but it's doable, and the outcome is liberating!  

 

- CREATE MORE SELF-REFLECTION TIME - don't be afraid to have a meal alone, or go on a walk without your phone or music.  It's important to be alone with your thoughts from time to time and check-in with yourself.  It gives you a healthy mind balance and you will start to learn so much about yourself!

 

These are just a few of the small changes that we are taking to create a healthier and more active lifestyle. We hope to keep it going throughout the year and make most, if not all of these daily habits!

I'm currently loving these rose gold tennis shoes from Hazel and Olive and this marble Swell Bottle that my sweet sister Caroline got me for Christmas. They makes getting ready for our daily walks twice as fun!
